Being an NFL head coach is way more than just the X's and O's. You need to remember that these are still a bunch of young men who need guidance in their life. Some of these kids come out of school at 21-years-old. They need a mentor. They need someone to mold them into becoming a great man not just on the field, but more importantly off the field as well.
Part of becoming a great man is just knowing how to survive. You can't be great if you're dead. Plain and simple. If you want to stay alive, you can't poison yourself. And that's the exact message that Nick Sirianni is drilling into his team of 53 men on the Philadelphia Eagles this season.
Rule #1 of football: Don't drink perfume. Just don't do it. Don't even give it a little taste. I know it smells good. I know it usually looks appetizing. But believe Nick Sirianni when he says that you never, ever drink it. That's how winning is done.
It's also done by being a selfless team and making sure that everybody realizes it takes everyone doing their job in order for everyone to be great. So on top of not drinking perfume, this is another great message from Coach to drill into the team.
This one you can see and hear is really getting through to the players. Almost every post-game interview with Jalen Hurts has the same exact messaging where he makes sure to credit the defense for allowing the offense to get themselves going. I'm sure Saquon Barkley would love to get the ball every once in a while in the redzone after he rips off a 40-yard run that gets the team into scoring position in the first place. But he knows it's best for the team to just do what they do best, and tush push Jalen into the end zone. The Eagles have two bonafide stud wide receivers with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith. That kind of dynamic doesn't always work out unless you have a strong culture in the building of putting the team before everything.
There are definitely some football-related criticisms that Nick Sirianni has deserved over the last year or so. But as far as team building and establishing core values go, that's right in Nick Sirianni's wheelhouse. And it seems like he's really starting to heat up in that department right now. You can smell a bit of "our year" in the air right now.
